We have received the following network notification from our upstream provider:

This is notification of the undersea Seacom Fibre maintenance job scheduled for Sunday 18 April 2010. The cable will be lifted from seabed for Engineers to work on.

The scheduled project time is expected to 09h00 - 16h00, but the risk of damaging the cable in the process is possible, which can delay the downtime.

International browsing will be affected. Clients should expect a Degraded performance.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused!

Kindly take note of the following Planned Maintenance that will be taking place during the period 31-January-2010 to and including the 02-February-2010, will affect SAT-3 traffic as per attached. The RET testing (testing of the 94 Restoration bearers) has already commenced. This is not service affecting and is in preparation for the Restoration exercise. Below are the tentative scheduled dates and times : RET on Friday 29 January starting at 10h00 SA time (not traffic-affecting exercise). This has already commenced as per above. Tentative Restoration Schedule for Sunday 31 January 2010 starting 02h00-17h00 SA time. This will facilitate the restoration of the 94 SAT-3 bearers to alternate submarine cables (SAFE/SMW3). Please take note that all Telkom SA Customers on the 94 Restorable bearers will experience physical patching hits for 10 minutes within the associated maintenance window. Unfortunately higher latency is a characteristic of the restoration route (via Malaysia and India to Europe) and is unavoidable. Power reconfiguration on Monday 1 February 2010, starting 02h00-08h00 SA time. This is to perform BU (Branching Unit) reconfiguration in order to normalise the power configuration on SAT-3. Please take note that all non-restorable traffic will be down for the full period (02h00-08h00 - SA time). The Telkom SAIX Network will also unfortunately be affected with a 50% degradation in capacity, resulting in congestion on International browsing during this period. The Telkom SA SAIX notice board will be updated. Tentative Normalisation Schedule 2 February 2010 starting at 02h00-17h00 SA time. This will facilitate the Normalisation of all 94 restorable bearers from the SAFE/SMW3 routes back to SAT-3. Please take note that 10 minute patching breaks will be experienced during this period. Summary of effect to TSA traffic:
Restorable: Will see physical patching hits on the following dates: 31 January 2010 and 2 February 2010, within the approximate maintenance window (02h00 to 17h30 SA time). Higher latency will be experienced during the restoration period. Non-Restorable: Traffic will be down for the duration of the Power Reconfiguration exercise on Monday 1 February 2010, starting 02h00 SA time, until the power has been successfully reconfigured. This usually takes between 2 to 6 hours. Non-Restorable traffic returns automatically after successful power reconfiguration has been performed.
